Politics: CBN Governor arrest rumor

CBN Godwin Emefiele

A few days ago, the news of the Department of State Services invading the head office of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in Abuja broke the internet but the battle may have been put on hold as Godwin Emefiele resumes duty on 17th of January, 2023.

Nigerians were eager to see his arrest news on trusted Television stations and Newspapers until he returned to office after spending several weeks in the United Kingdom and the United States.

His resumption was announced in a statement by the CBN Director of Corporate Communications, Mr Osita Nwanisobi.

The Department of State Services last year sought to arrest Emefiele, over terrorism charges which were rejected by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court Abuja, Justice John Tsoho.

The suit was described as an illegal operation and plot to deceive the court into granting a frivolous order to help arrest and deprive an innocent Emefiele of his personal liberty.

Meanwhile, the Department of State Services in a release after the rumour went up this week denied invading the CBN head office in Abuja.

In a statement, DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, also said the secret police did not arrest the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Dismissing media reports of the purported arrest, the DSS spokesman described it as fake and misleading.

Before DSS denial of the arrest, Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, has said he was ā€œflabbergastedā€ that President Muhammadu Buhari has not called the Department of State Services to order over its alleged case against Godwin Emefiele.
