Politics: Rivers Assembly begins impeachment proceedings against Fubara, deputy

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the long-simmering political warfare in Rivers State reached a boiling point on Thursday, as the House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

The move marks a dramatic escalation in the crisis, with lawmakers accusing the state’s top two executives of “gross misconduct”—a constitutional charge that could lead to their removal from office.

During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, presented a notice of allegations.

Economy: CBN projects $18.81bn current account surplus for 2026

NRTC WEEKLY learnt that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) forecast a current account surplus of $18.81 billion for 2026, up from $16.94 billion in 2025.

The projection, contained in the CBN’s 2026 Macroeconomic Outlook, represents 11.16 per cent of GDP.

Increased portfolio investment inflows and external borrowings will maintain a net borrowing position of $10.15 billion in the financial account.

The International Investment Position is expected to show net liabilities of $69.58 billion.

External reserves are projected to rise to $51.04 billion, supported by foreign exchange market reforms and exchange rate stability.

Sports: FG confirms release of Super Eagles’ AFCON group-stage bonuses

NRTC WEEKLY gathered the Federal Government announced that all group-stage bonuses owed to the Super Eagles at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations have been paid and should begin reflecting in the players’ domiciliary accounts within hours.

The Minister of State for Finance, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, made this known on Thursday while reacting to reports suggesting that members of the national team were contemplating skipping training sessions and might refuse to travel to Marrakesh for their quarter-final encounter against Algeria.

In a statement shared via her official X account, Uzoka-Anite said the issue of unpaid bonuses had been addressed through joint efforts by the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria.
