Sports: Premier League, La Liga returns

The highly anticipated return of major football leagues yesterday sparked immense excitement among fans worldwide.

Manchester City bagged the 2023/24 Premier League title

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that football fever took hold as the Premier League and La Liga resumed, with supporters eagerly reuniting with their beloved clubs.

Social media buzzed with heated debates, bold predictions, and celebratory posts. From thrilling last-minute goals to surprising upsets, the return of these leagues rekindled the magic of the beautiful game, leaving fans hungry for more.

Prominent clubs like Manchester United and Fulham kicked off the Premier League, while Las Palmas and Sevilla did the same for La Liga.

NRTC WEEKLY also learned that as matches continue today, fans are eagerly anticipating their clubs to deliver standout performances.

Entertainment: P-Square conflict

NRTC WEEKLY learned that Nigerians remain deeply invested in the tumultuous relationship between P-Square. Their initial split left fans, who had grown up with their music, heartbroken and disappointed.

While their reunion brought immense joy, the latest separation has reignited feelings of sadness and confusion. Many fans continue to hope for reconciliation, while others encourage the brothers to prioritize their happiness.

Social media is abuzz with discussions, memes, and divided opinions, highlighting the nation’s strong emotional connection to the duo.

Actor-turned-pastor Yul Edochie took to Instagram to urge the singers to stay apart if that brings them peace, a sentiment echoed by many other Nigerians.

Politics: Seizure of Nigeria jets

News of the presidential aircraft being seized in France and Switzerland due to a long-standing legal dispute between the Chinese company Zhongshan and the Ogun State Government over the management of an export processing zone was met with disbelief.

NRTC WEEKLY learned that the seized jets, valued at over $100 million, include a Dassault Falcon 7X in Paris and a Boeing 737 and Airbus A330 undergoing maintenance in Switzerland.

The seizure of the presidential jets stems from a dispute originating from a 2001 bilateral investment treaty between China and Nigeria, which led to Zhongshan’s involvement in the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) project. However, Ogun State terminated the contract in 2016, igniting a legal battle.

In 2021, an arbitration tribunal ruled in favour of Zhongshan, awarding the company $70 million in damages, a decision upheld by the UK Court of Appeal in 2023.

As of press time, the Federal and Ogun State Governments have responded to the situation, and reports indicate that the Chinese firm has expressed openness to negotiation.

Business: Economy

NRTC WEEKLY learned that many Nigerians continue to hold onto the hope of significant economic reform under President Bola Tinubu, driven by faith in his promises.

However, as of press time, commodity prices continue to rise daily, leaving many unable to afford basic meals. With the economic hardship and hunger that fueled the EndBadGovernance protests worsening, the question remains: What should citizens do?
