Politics: Ondo Election

After months of campaigning by 17 political parties for the governorship seat in Alagbaka, Akure, voters are heading to polling units today to choose their next governor.

Voting is scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m. and conclude by 2:00 p.m., although delays are possible. This election will determine the successor of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The race is primarily between Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Aiyedatiwa. As voting unfolds, all eyes are on who will emerge victorious.

Leading Story: Adeboye’s prayer for the Naira

Pastor E.A. Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), made headlines with his remarks on Nigeria’s economic challenges and the Naira’s exchange rate.

During a Special Holy Ghost Congress in Abuja, Adeboye revealed that the exchange rate might have soared to ₦10,000 to $1 without divine intervention.

He attributed Nigeria’s financial struggles to its dependence on fuel imports despite being an oil-rich nation.

He criticized the inefficiency of Nigeria’s refineries, stating, “Billions have been spent on refineries that remain nonfunctional, forcing us to rely on imported petrol.”

He also highlighted the backlash faced by the president after removing fuel subsidies. “We need divine help. If not for God’s intervention, $1 could have been ₦10,000 by now. This shows the urgency of our need for prayers,” Adeboye said.

Metro: Baba Gbenro’s Death

The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of Moses Korede Are, popularly known as Baba Gbenro, a gospel actor and producer.

Actor Oluwaseun Adejumobi announced his passing on Instagram, writing: “Heaven’s gain again. The General has gone to rest.” Baba Gbenro was a prominent actor in the Mount Zion series Abattoir.

He was also the founder and president of Calvary Movies Drama Ministry and CEO of Calvary Movies Television.

As of press time, burial arrangements for the late actor have not been confirmed.

Sports: International Football break

The ongoing international football break has left many fans longing for the return of weekend league action, a major source of entertainment and social engagement.

While some worry about injuries players may sustain during national team duty, others see this period as an opportunity for athletes to rest and recover.

The break also brings the excitement of international matches and builds anticipation for the resumption of domestic leagues.

Business: Economic Hardship

Rising food and fuel prices are intensifying economic hardship in Nigeria, with widespread implications.

Higher costs have driven inflation, reducing purchasing power and limiting disposable income, which slows economic growth. Increased transportation expenses are disrupting supply chains, causing shortages and further price hikes.
