OFFICIAL: Musa in, Moffi missing in Super Eagles’ 25-man 2023 AFCON squad


Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has named Ahmed Musa and Africa Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen in his 25-man strong squad ahead of the 2023 AFCON starting in January.

The list mainly comprises of players based in Europe with a lot of them shining stars in their teams.

Three goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders and eight forwards make up the team of 25 players.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman make the list.

Also, Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili is listed alongside Omonia Nicosia shot-stopper Francis Uzoho. Enyimba goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo is the only Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) player named in the squad.

Teammates Chidozie Awaziem and Bruno Onyemaechi (players for Boavista FC) are among the defenders invited for the upcoming AFCON.

Olaoluwa Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel and long-serving Kenneth Omeruo are also on the list.

Meanwhile, five midfielders have also been listed by Peseiro. They are Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka and Joe Aribo.

Nigeria have won the AFCON tournament thrice (1980, 1994 & 2013).

Defenders: William Troost-Ekong (PAOK Salonika, Greece); Bright Osayi-Samuel (Fenerbahce FC, Turkey); Olaoluwa Aina (Nottingham Forest, England); Zaidu Sanusi (FC Porto, Portugal); Bruno Onyemaechi (Boavista FC, Portugal); Oluwasemilogo Ajayi (West Bromwich Albion, England); Calvin Bassey (Fulham FC, England); Chidozie Awaziem (Boavista FC, Portugal); Kenneth Omeruo (Kasimpasa FC, Turkey).
