NPFL Champion Exit: Ogunmodede Leaves Remo Stars Amid Dual Role Strain
Remo Stars Shock: Ogunmodede Ends Decade-Long Reign After Clash with Board

Daniel Ogunmodede has resigned as head coach of Remo Stars after a decade-long stint. The Super Eagles assistant cited mounting conflicts with the club hierarchy and national team duties.

The resignation came hours after Remo Stars’ 3–1 defeat to Kwara United in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The team now sits 17th with 10 points from eight games.

Ogunmodede’s exit follows a difficult month. Remo Stars lost four consecutive matches, conceding 13 goals and scoring only three. A 5–1 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns ended their CAF Champions League campaign with a 7–1 aggregate score.

Despite signing a three-year contract extension in August 2024, he departs two seasons early. His dual role with the Super Eagles reportedly strained focus and coordination.

Club insiders revealed that Ogunmodede missed 12 NPFL fixtures last season and the entire pre-season due to national assignments. His Africa Cup of Nations commitments should extend until January 2026.

Tensions reportedly peaked after the heavy defeat to Sundowns. Club officials grew frustrated with his divided attention, though no formal statement is released.

Managerial background

Ogunmodede joined Remo Stars in 2015 and rose from assistant coach to head coach. He built the club’s youth structure and guided them to NPFL promotion in 2021.

Under his leadership, Remo Stars finished as league runners-up twice before clinching the 2024/25 NPFL title—the first for a Southwest club in two decades. The triumph secured their third consecutive continental appearance.

Ogunmodede holds UEFA A and B coaching licences, alongside a CAF B licence. A graduate in physiology and human kinetics, he is recognised for his tactical intelligence and player development.

He managed 100 NPFL games, securing 53 wins, 20 draws, and 27 losses. His consistency earned him induction into the National Institute for Sports Hall of Fame in February 2025.

Remo Stars are expected to name assistant coach Sulaiman Kamil as interim replacement.

The club now faces a fight for survival in the NPFL, while Ogunmodede turns full attention to the Super Eagles’ campaign.
