Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has inaugurated the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, with a strong mandate to restore the institution’s lost glory.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the New Festival Hall of Government House, Benin City, Governor Okpebholo emphasised the critical role of education in societal development, stressing that AAU must reclaim its reputation as a center of academic excellence.
“Education is the bedrock of development, and Ambrose Alli University holds a special place in Edo State. The institution has produced some of the finest minds in Nigeria, and it is our responsibility to restore its lost glory and ensure its continuous growth,” the governor stated.

He highlighted his administration’s commitment to revitalizing the university, noting that the state government had increased AAU’s monthly subvention from N41 million to N500 million.
Additionally, special interventions have been introduced to accelerate infrastructural development, ensuring that students and staff have the resources needed to thrive.

Governor Okpebholo also revealed that his administration had successfully resolved the long-standing challenges faced by over 100 medical students at the institution, bringing much-needed relief to the affected students.
Addressing the newly inaugurated council members, the governor urged them to approach their responsibilities with dedication, vision, and a deep sense of responsibility.
“This is your time to make a lasting impact. You have been chosen because we believe in your ability to restore AAU’s lost glory. Let us work together to rebuild its reputation and make it a beacon of academic excellence once again,” he charged.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s support for the university community, assuring management, staff, and students of continued government backing in their academic and professional pursuits.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Dan Orbih, expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve, acknowledging the importance of AAU in the development of Edo State.
“It is clear from the steps you have taken so far that the move is to bring the university back to life,” Orbih noted.
Other members of the newly inaugurated council include Prof. Friday Okonofua, Prof. Steve Amiemenkharu, Hon. Lukman Muhammad, Prof. Idialu Jeremiah Uwaifo, Prof. Eric Kelly Inanemo Omogbai, and Prof. Omoruyi Ikponmwonsa Osahon.
