Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has launched the Back-to-Farm Initiative, a large-scale agricultural program aimed at enhancing food production across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The governor unveiled the initiative during a meeting with farmers at the Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement in Ovia South West, Edo South.

Speaking at the event, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing agriculture and making farming a viable source of economic growth for the state.

Governor Okpebholo emphasised that the initiative is not just a policy on paper but a practical step toward achieving food security.

He noted that Edo people have a strong agricultural heritage, and his administration intends to leverage that strength to ensure food sufficiency for the state, Nigeria, and even for export.

“This time, we will farm together. We are not just producing food for Edo State but also contributing to Nigeria’s food supply. Farming is now a serious business, and we must embrace it with full commitment,” Okpebholo declared.

As part of the initiative, the state government will establish farms in all three senatorial districts and provide essential farming incentives, including fertilizers, mechanized farm equipment, and financial support.

Governor Okpebholo assured farmers that his administration will provide the necessary resources to enable large-scale farming.

“We will supply equipment, fertilizers, and financial support so our farmers can produce food in abundance. This is the season to farm, and we are fully committed to making this initiative a success,” he said.

The initiative received further backing from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Osagie Aibuedefe, who announced that the government has allocated over N70 billion to support agricultural development in the state.

He assured farmers that these funds would significantly improve their access to modern farming tools and inputs.

During the meeting, the Vice President of the Farmers Association, Benson Enahikare, delivered a speech on behalf of the association’s president.

He highlighted key challenges faced by farmers, particularly the issue of cattle encroachment, which has led to the destruction of crops.

Governor Okpebholo acknowledged these concerns and assured farmers that his administration would work towards providing lasting solutions.

The Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement, spanning 2,300 hectares, was originally established in 1963 to promote agricultural activities in the region.

With the governor’s renewed focus on farming, the settlement is set to play a crucial role in the state’s agricultural resurgence.

The Back-to-Farm Initiative marks a major step toward Edo State’s economic diversification and food security.
