Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has pledged that his administration will prioritise the welfare of civil servants and ensure their happiness.
Fred Itua, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, in a statement, said he made the promise on Friday during a meeting with the Executives of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State Chapter, led by its Acting State Chairman, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide.
The meeting, which took place at the government house, was an opportunity for the NLC executives to congratulate the governor on his recent victory at the governorship election tribunal, which affirmed his success in the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election.
The governor emphasised that the well-being of Edo workers is a responsibility his administration takes seriously.
“Whatever we are doing to benefit Edo workers is because it is our responsibility as a government. The people of Edo voted for us to work for them, and that is precisely what we are doing – ensuring a better life for all, including the workers,” he said.

The governor also highlighted his commitment to transparency and openness in governance, stating, “We embrace transparency in all we do, allowing the people to trust us. We are not afraid of criticism, as positive feedback helps us improve our service to Edo people.”
Okpebholo noted that the administration’s achievements are aligned with the renewed hope instilled by President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the nation.
“The renewed hope agenda of the President has given us the platform to serve the people of Edo better, as we focus on practical governance,” he said.
The governor reiterated that his administration remains committed to fostering peace, unity, growth, and development in the state, ensuring that all three Senatorial zones are represented in every initiative and policy.
However, Bernard Egwekhide, the NLC’s Acting Chairman, commended the Governor for his efforts towards improving the welfare of Edo workers.
“Workers in Edo State are proud of you and your developmental strides,” Egwekhide said.
“Your administration has fostered a positive and productive relationship with workers. You’ve taken steps to favour Edo workers, including the unrequested payment of the 13th-month salary and a significant increase in the subvention to Ambrose Ali University (AAU), from N41 million to N500 million.”
Egwekhide also praised the governor for regularising casual workers and raising the monthly pension payout for both local and state pensioners from N50 million to N1 billion.
Egwekhide revealed that a committee had been formed to address the compulsory pension scheme, which has become a financial burden on retired civil servants.
He assured that a report would be submitted to the Governor for further action.
In a related development, Governor Okpebholo received Apanke Utande, the new Branch Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Edo State, during a courtesy visit.
The governor urged the CBN to collaborate with his administration to further improve the lives of Edo people.
