Okpebholo secures induction for 128 AAU medical graduates

In a significant move for education and student welfare, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has secured the induction of 128 medical graduates from Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma.

The governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Friday, said the induction followed a delay that stretched for nearly six months.

The medical graduates, who completed their studies and graduated in August 2024, faced an indefinite postponement of their induction due to the lingering crisis that affected the smooth transition to professional status.

The delay, which lasted for over a year, was a result of several unresolved issues that prevented the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) from conducting the ceremony.

In response to a recent formal protest by the affected students, Governor Okpebholo intervened, coordinating with relevant authorities to find a solution which led to the MDCN scheduling the induction for February 13, 2025.

Emmanuel Iyamu, Edo State Commissioner for Education, appreciated the MDCN Registrar, Fatima Kyari, for her unwavering support.

Iyamu also reassured the medical students that the welfare of all students remains a top priority for Governor Okpebholo’s administration.

“This induction marks the culmination of years of hard work and determination by these young doctors, and we are pleased to have played a role in making this a reality for them.

“Governor Okpebholo is committed to improving the educational sector in Edo State, ensuring that all students receive the support they need to succeed.”

The issue earlier sparked public outcry, as medical students of the 2015 set, who were waiting for their induction, staged a protest and blocked the Benin-Auchi highway to demand immediate action.

Precious Omohegbele, a spokesperson for the affected students, expressed their frustration, revealing that they had spent ten years in medical school, only to face delays in their induction.

Governor Okpebholo acted quickly by inviting all concerned parties to discuss the matter and explore solutions.

His intervention has not only resolved the crisis but has also revitalized the morale of both students and staff at the university.

In addition to addressing the induction issue, the governor’s administration further took several measures to strengthen the institution.

This includes the reinstatement of staff members who were previously disengaged by the former administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki for exercising their legal and labour rights.

Governor Okpebholo also reintroduced monthly subventions to the university, further demonstrating his commitment to improving the state’s educational system.
