Palm Sunday: CAN urges leaders to show empathy amid rising hardship

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has appealed to political leaders across the country to act with compassion and take swift measures to address the worsening economic challenges confronting citizens, as Christians commemorate Palm Sunday.

In a statement released on Sunday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the message of Palm Sunday carries important lessons for those in leadership, especially at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with financial strain and global instability.

Drawing from the biblical account of Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, Okoh explained that the occasion reflects humility, peace, and purposeful leadership, rather than the display of authority.

“Jesus entered Jerusalem with calm resolve at a time of uncertainty and expectation. It was not a show of force, but a message of peace, purpose, and hope,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria’s current socio-economic situation calls for similar qualities from leaders.

“Across Nigeria, many are feeling the weight of the times. The cost of living is rising, and for countless families, daily life is getting harder,” Okoh said.

Okoh also connected the country’s economic difficulties to global tensions, particularly involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, noting that such developments are affecting energy markets worldwide.

“The impact is already here. Fuel is more expensive. Transport costs are rising. Food prices are climbing,” he said, adding that these factors are worsening the hardship experienced by ordinary Nigerians.

The CAN president stressed that leadership conduct is especially important during uncertain periods, as it plays a key role in rebuilding public trust.

“For many Nigerians, the concern is simple and immediate: how to cope, how to plan, how to stay afloat. When life feels this uncertain, people need reassurance, stability, and the quiet confidence that those in positions of responsibility understand what they are going through,” he stated.

He further encouraged leaders to adopt a governance style built on compassion, restraint, and dedication to the welfare of the people.

“True leadership is not always loud. It is seen in empathy and in decisions that ease burdens, calm anxieties, and bring people together. This is a time for such wisdom,” Okoh added.

Beyond government officials, CAN also urged the Church and the wider public to foster unity and peaceful coexistence, drawing inspiration from the spirit of Palm Sunday.

“It reminds us of a moment when people from all walks of life came together with one purpose. That same spirit is needed now. We must stand for peace, strengthen unity, and support one another,” he said.

Speaking to young Nigerians and others heavily affected by the economic downturn, Okoh encouraged them to remain hopeful and resilient.

“The challenges are real, but they are not the end of the story,” he said.

He concluded by expressing optimism that the values associated with Palm Sunday would inspire a renewed commitment to unity and national progress.

“As we journey through this sacred season, may the spirit of Palm Sunday guide us towards quiet courage, shared purpose, and a renewed commitment to the good of all,” the statement added.
