Panel suspends Euracare MD, two doctors over alleged negligence in death of Chimamanda Adichie’s son

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, along with two other doctors, after concluding its probe into allegations of medical negligence linked to the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

News Round The Clock reports that the toddler, one of the twin sons of celebrated writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness.

In a statement issued on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Adichie recounted the painful events leading to her son’s death and alleged that medical negligence played a role in the tragedy.

According to her, the child was taken to Euracare Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line after what initially appeared to be a common cold worsened and “turned into a very serious infection.”

She explained that during the procedure, Nkanu was sedated but was allegedly not adequately monitored after being administered propofol. This, she said, led to serious complications, including unresponsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest.

Adichie stated, “He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” where he had been taken for medical procedures.

Following the public outcry, the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel was set up to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

At the end of its inquiry, the panel announced the suspension of Majekodunmi, the hospital’s anesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, and the Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh.

The three doctors are barred from practicing medicine in Nigeria pending the determination of their cases before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

The panel also established a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 additional doctors: Dr. Adeseye Akinsete, Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr. Anthony Ajeh, Dr. Amarachi Bayo, Dr. Nkechi Peji, Dr. Olaoye Oludare, Dr. Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr. Patricia Akintan, Dr. Babatunde Bamgboye, and Dr. Raji Faidat.

However, eight other doctors investigated in connection with the matter were exonerated.

The decisions followed a review of petitions filed against 21 medical practitioners, alongside their counter-affidavits and sworn oral testimonies.

The investigation was concluded during the panel’s 25th sitting held in Abuja on February 17 and 18, 2026.
