PDP vows to proceed with national convention despite court order

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its dismay over a ruling delivered on Friday by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The party described the judgment by Justice Kolawole Omotosho as an “assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.”

Despite its strong objection to the ruling, the PDP stated that the court’s judgment does not invalidate the party’s capacity to continue with the processes and activities necessary for its upcoming National Convention.

The purpose of the convention is to elect new national officers who will steer the party’s affairs for the next four years.

The opposition party pointed to a recent Supreme Court judgment that supports the supremacy of a political party in managing its internal affairs as justification for its position.

In response, the PDP has directed its members, chapters, and organs to “remain steadfast and focused” on preparations for the National Convention.

However, the party also emphasised its commitment to the Rule of Law and announced that its lawyers have been instructed to take immediate steps to appeal the judgment.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP affirmed its unwavering determination to “uphold, defend and promote multi-party democracy in our country.”
