Pelé: Buhari, NFF, Obama, others pay tribute


Tributes have continued to pour in following the death of Brazil football legend Pelé who passed away on Thursday.

Pelé remains a true LEGEND. There is no denying the huge international impact he had on the round leather game (and sports in general). Yes! His death is painful and although he has gone to be with his ancestors, he continues to rest well in sporting immortality.

There will never be a player like Pelé (born Edson Arantes do Nascimento). He was the first true international figure associated with football globally. At the mention of the name Pelé, you think football instantly.

Since the announcement of his death on Thursday evening, tributes have continued to pour in by sports personalities, top political figures, football fans and several individuals on social media. We take a look at some of these condolence messages.

The likes of Brazil’s president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari, Neymar Jnr., Harry Maguire, Rivaldo, former US president Barack Obama amongst others have paid tribute to the legend who died at 82 after a protracted battle with cancer.

The 44th president of the United States described Pelé as someone who “understood the power of sports to bring people together.”

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva

Brazil’s president-elect, who was also the 35th president of the South American nation between 2003 and 2010 said when Pelé got the ball, he always did something special.

Muhammadu Buhari

President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari said the world would not forget the legacy and contributions of Pelé.

“Pele is gone but the world will never forget him. RIP,” read a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, titled ‘President Buhari mourns soccer legend, Pele.’

Relaying his condolences on behalf of all Nigerians, Buhari said, “He had an enormous generosity of spirit and humility despite his greatness as a footballer and sportsman.

“He also built bridges across nations, races and even religions. He was a UN Ambassador of goodwill. Pele is gone but the world will never forget him. RIP. “

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)

The Nigeria Football Federation also mourned the demise of the Brazilian.

Three Lions defender and Manchester United captain Harry Maguire also paid tribute to Pelé.
