Premier League: Awoniyi, five others nominated for August Player of the Month

Lanky Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi and Cameroonian Bryan Mbeumo are among the six players nominated for August Premier League Player of the Month.

Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma, Tottenham midfielder James Maddison, Rodri and Jarrod Bowen are the other nominees.

Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest)

The Super Eagles striker scored in each of his first three games for Nottingham Forest this season. He also found the back of the net in each of the last four league games last season.

He thereby set the record for being the first Forest player to score in seven straight Premier League matches. He also became the third African after Emmanuel Seyi Adebayor and Mohamed Salah to achieve the feat.

Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton)

No player set up more goals than the Japanese’s two in August.

His brilliant solo goal against Wolves stands out but his assists, coupled with his general work rate also shows he is an all-round player.

Mitoma created 11 chances in the month. Only two players had more in the entire league.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)

The Englishman had three goal contributions in August, helping West Ham United attain the second spot for the month.

He scored two goals and assisted another goal as the Hammers recorded two wins and a draw in the month.

Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford)

The 24-year-old has been Brentford’s main attacking threat this term and he demonstrated that in his three goals in August.

He has stepped up in the absence of the suspended Ivan Toney, with Brentford going through the month without a single defeat.

Rodri (Manchester City)

The Spanish midfielder scored twice in August. That’s the total number of Premier League goals he had last season.

He is also the only nominee with a 100 per cent winning record. His 361 passes were more than any other player in August.

James Maddison (Tottenham)

Maddison is beginning to establish himself as, arguably, the best Premier League summer signing so far.

The 26-year-old was on fire in August, grabbing a goal and assisting two others. He has helped Spurs quickly transform into a very threatening attacking team.
