PSG expose fragile Liverpool as Champions League dream teeters

Liverpool face a daunting European test after a sobering defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in their UEFA Champions League last eight fist leg match. The result leaves their UCL hopes hanging by a thread.

It was another painful night for the visitors, who failed to register a single shot on target. On the other hand, PSG controlled proceedings with authority and attacking intent.

The breakthrough arrived early through Desire Doue, whose effort deflected beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili. The goal unsettled Liverpool and shifted momentum firmly toward the hosts.

Despite moments of resistance, Liverpool struggled to gain any attacking foothold. Their five-man defence signalled caution but failed to stem PSG’s relentless pressure.

Mamardashvili, deputising for Alisson Becker, produced several crucial saves. However, the pressure eventually told as PSG found another breakthrough.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the lead with a brilliant individual effort. He rounded the keeper after a precise pass from Joao Neves.

Liverpool were fortunate to avoid further punishment before the break, after a penalty decision involving Ibrahima Konate was overturned after VAR review.

Still, PSG’s dominance remained clear as they continued to create chances. Ousmane Dembele missed several openings that could have widened the margin.

After the interval, Liverpool showed slight improvement in intent and energy. Yet, their attacking play lacked the sharpness required at this level.

Alexander Isak made a long-awaited return from injury late on. However, his introduction failed to alter the overall pattern of the match.

PSG, by contrast, remained composed and tactically disciplined throughout. Their efficiency in front of goal proved the defining difference between both sides.
