Racism strikes Rangers stars as Fernandez and Gassama speak out

Police in Scotland has launched an investigation after Emmanuel Fernandez and Djeidi Gassama shared screenshots of racist abuse on social media. The incidents followed Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Livingston FC.

Both players started the match, with title hopes dented against the Scottish Premiership’s bottom side. Fernandez, London-born, qualifies for Nigeria, while Gassama is Mauritanian-born and France U20 capped.

Rangers called the Instagram abuse “unacceptable” and reported it to Meta, the platform’s parent company. A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed: “We are aware of offensive posts online and enquiries are at an early stage.”

Club and authorities rally behind players as racism sparks national outcry

Rangers stated: “For any player, opening a phone and seeing abuse tied to the colour of their skin is simply unacceptable.” They added, “Our immediate priority is the wellbeing of the players involved.”
