Marcus Rashford has become the first English player to score for Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League after striking twice in a 2-1 win over Newcastle United.
The Manchester United loanee scored both goals on Thursday at St. James’ Park. His brace secured Barcelona’s opening group-stage victory.
His performance earned the Player of the Match award and praise from Barcelona coach Hansi Flick.

A unique milestone
Rashford’s achievement is historic. Gary Lineker had scored for Barcelona in European competition during the 1980s, but those goals came before the Champions League era.
No English player has featured for Barcelona’s first team in the Champions League until now. Previous academy prospect Marcus McGuane only played for Barcelona B.
Loan move in focus
The 27-year-old joined Barcelona in July on a season-long loan with an option to buy. The deal followed inconsistent form at Manchester United.
Despite early rumours of a premature recall, Barcelona has insisted Rashford will be given full backing to succeed. His display in Newcastle may silence doubts.
The victory has boosted Barcelona’s group-stage hopes while it also marks a new chapter for Rashford.
