Real Madrid will go ahead with the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on Saturday despite protesting referees remarks ahead of the big game.

Despite the storm brewing ahead of the Copa del Rey final, Real Madrid has cleared all doubts regarding their participation. While tensions escalated over referees’ remarks, the club chose to honour the competition and its fans.

Earlier, Real Madrid strongly condemned the comments made by match officials assigned to the final against FC Barcelona. They described the referees’ words as “unacceptable” and accused them of harbouring “clear and manifest animosity” toward the club.

Moreover, the club felt the remarks, especially the “threatening tone” used, undermined the principles of fairness expected before such a global event. With millions set to watch, they believe officiating should reflect neutrality, not bias.

Consequently, Real Madrid skipped their pre-final activities, including open training, a press conference, and the traditional club dinner. However, this wasn’t a withdrawal tactic – it was a firm protest demanding accountability and transparency from Spanish football authorities.

Although the situation sparked uncertainty, the club later issued another statement to clear the air. “Real Madrid communicates that our team has never considered giving up playing tomorrow’s final.”

Additionally, the statement emphasised the importance of the occasion, insisting it shouldn’t be tarnished by off-pitch drama. “Our club understands that the unfortunate and inappropriate statements of the referees…cannot stain a sporting event of global importance.”

While Real Madrid remains displeased with the officiating controversy, they’re pressing forward for the love of the game and respect for fans. “Real Madrid understands that the values of football must prevail, despite the hostility and animosity…by these referees designated for the final.”

So, although emotions run high, the match will go on, and the spotlight returns to where it belongs – on the pitch.

Saturday’s final to be played at the Estadio de La Cartuja, kicks off at exactly 21:00 (GMT+1/WAT).
