Record breaker Lamine Yamal meets the Euros

FC Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has now become the youngest ever player to grace the European Championships making his tournament debut in the group opener against Croatia.

Yamal’s rise to stardom under Xavi Hernandez in the 23/24 season was rewarded with seven goals and ten assists across all competitions for La Blaugrana.

In an electric performance against Croatia who had Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol on defensive duty in that flank, he put out one of his most impressive  offensive displays so far.

Yamal, 16, has now broken the record held by Poland’s Kacper Kozlowski. Making his first appearance in Euro 2021 at the age of 17 years and 246 days.

The Barcelona teenage sensation capped of his debut game with an assist for Real Madrid full back in the 3-0 victory over the Croats. His playmaking return necessitating he’s now the youngest ever in the referred metric.

In October 2023, he became Barcelona’s youngest ever goalscorer and with the Spaniards still having a run of games in the tournament, he has a number of records he could set his sights on.

These records include the youngest ever to make an appearance in the final held by Portugal’s Renato Sanches, back in the 2016 tournament.

Youngest goalscorer in the tournament, youngest player to find a final goal, youngest player to grace s knockout game amidst others.

Since making his debut for La Furia Roja, he’s been trusted by gaffer Luis de la Fuente to take up the available spot on the right side of the attack.

At the expense of the experienced Mikel Oyrazabal and Pablo Sarabia.

By game, the quality on offer from this lad continues to impress world football at large which despite perhaps uncalled for has even triggered comparisons to Lionel Messi’s rise to the big stage.

Spain’s European Championships campaign continues in a group rounded off by defending champions Italy and Albania.
