The House of Representatives has moved forward with a proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish the office of the Prime Minister as the head of government, while the President would serve as the head of state.
The bill passed its second reading on Thursday. This proposal is part of a broader set of 32 constitutional amendment bills that also cleared the second reading stage.
Among the other bills is one aimed at reserving specific legislative seats for women in both the National Assembly and state houses of assembly.

Another seeks to shorten the timeframe for resolving pre-election disputes by establishing dedicated tribunals for such cases, as well as setting clearer guidelines for suspending lawmakers from legislative duties.
Additionally, a bill proposing changes to the eligibility criteria for presidential, vice-presidential, gubernatorial, and deputy gubernatorial candidates passed its second reading.
The House also advanced a bill reviewing the status of the Federal Capital Territory concerning presidential elections, alongside proposals for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State.
With these approvals, the total number of constitutional amendment bills that have progressed beyond the second reading now stands at 113.
