Review of Premier League GameWeek 20


We witnessed another round of stunning football as Premier League GameWeek 20 began and ended in London.

Oladipupo Mojeed brings us the details of all the action from Premier League GameWeek 20.

Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

The Hammers extended their Premier League winning run to 4 games with victory over Crystal Palace, taking them 4th place on the league table.

Palace took an early lead when Wilfred Zaha found the back of the net from the edge of the box, just 3 minutes into the match.

The visitors levelled 6 minutes later when Tomas Soucek headed in the ball after a flick from Michail Antonio. Tomas Soucek then gave West Ham the lead on 25 minutes with a superb volley.

No more goals in the quite eventful first half despite Michail Antonioā€™s efforts, who hit the post twice.

West Ham doubled their lead after the break with Craig Dawsonā€™s thumping header. This turned out to be the winner as Michy Batshuayi pulled one back for the hosts in added time.

Palace now sits 14th with 23 points.

Newcastle 1-2 Leeds United

Marcelo Bielsaā€™s men got back to winning ways with a victory over the Magpies at St. Jamesā€™ Park.

Rodrigo fired the visitors to an early lead after a quick break involving Patrick Bamford and Raphinha. The hosts were much better after the break and were rewarded with an equalizer from Miguel Almiron.

Jack Harrison gave Leeds back the lead 4 minutes later with a fierce shot, scoring his 4th goal of the season.

Jamal Lewis and Jamaal Lascelles each tried to get a second equalizer but were both denied by the crossbar. Ilan Meslier also did well to deny Jonjo Shelvey the chance to draw the hosts level.

Leeds stay 12th on 26 points while Newcastle remain 16th with 19 points after a winless run of 9 games.

West Bromwich Albion 0-5 Manchester City

Pep Guardiolaā€™s men ran riot at the Hawthorns as they hit 5 past West Brom with no reply.

The absence of Kevin De Bruyne was hardly felt as the Citizens easily swept the Baggies aside to go top of the table. Scoring began quite early as Ilkay Gundogan found the back of the net as early as the 6th minute.

Jao Cancelo doubled the lead 20 minutes on with a curling shot from the edge of the box before Gundogan netted his second for the night 10 minutes later.

Riyad Mahrez made it 4 just before half time with a fierce shot from the right side of the penalty area then set up Raheem Sterling for the only goal of the second half on 57 minutes.

Manchester City sit top with 41 points, 3 ahead of their city rivals while West Brom stay 19th with 11 points.

Southampton 1-3 Arsenal

Stuart Armstrongā€™s early goal stood for nothing as the Gunners claimed all 3 points at the Saint Maryā€™s with a comeback victory.

James Ward Prowse set up Armstong for the opener as early as the 3rd minute to put the Saints ahead. Nicolas Pepe levelled for the visitors 5 minutes later after being found by Granit Xhakaā€™s excellent pass.

Arsenal went ahead shortly before half time when Alexandre Lacazette found Bukayo Saka with a nice pass. The Englishman then went round the goalkeeper to find the back of the net.

Arsenal confirmed victory 72 minutes on, Saka finding Lacazette this time around, with the Frenchman finishing at the far post.

The win in Premier League GameWeek 20 clash means Arsenal moves to 9th place with one point above the Saints.

Chelsea 0-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Thomas Tuchel’s first match in charge of Chelsea ended in a goalless draw with Wolves at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea controlled the majority of possession throughout the game but failed to score. The best chance of the first half came when Callum Hudson Odoi fired a low cross into the box but Olivier Giroud narrowly failed to connect with the ball.

After the break, the Blues continue to press for a lead but were denied, Conor Coady, pulling off 2 great blocks in the process. At the other end, Pedro Netoā€™s effort clipped the top of the crossbar as he failed to net the opener after chipping Edouard Mendy.

The result moved Chelsea back up 8th place, level on points with Arsenal with Wolves down to 13th on 23 points.

Burnley 2-3 Aston Villa

Sean Dycheā€™s men moved 10 points clear of relegation places with a comeback victory over Aston Villa at Turf Moor.

The match was quite the opposite of the rather uneventful first leg.

Ollie Watkins opened scoring as he finished Matt Targettā€™s cross 14 minutes in. Burnley didnā€™t equalize until the second half when Ben Mee found Ashley Westwoodā€™s corner with a thumping header.

Jack Grealish gave Villa the lead a second time in the 68th minute after being denied a wonderful solo goal earlier by Nick Pope.

In an unexpected turn of events, the hosts hit back 8 minutes later when Dwight Mcneilā€™s cross found the bottom corner and Chris Wood scoring the winner in the 79th minute.

Burnley sit 15th with 22 points while Villa drop to 10th on 29 points.

Brighton & Hove Albion 0-0 Fulham

Brighton and Fulham played out a draw at the Amex stadium.

Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola had a man of the match performance, denying Brighton from finding the back of the net.

The best chance of the game, however, went to Fulham in the last minutes as Ruben Loftus-Cheekā€™s goal-bound effort was kept out by Lewis Dunkā€™s brilliant clearance.

Everton 1-1 Leicester City

Youri Tielemens cancelled out Evertonā€™s lead to earn the Foxes a point at Goodison Park.

Everton took the lead 30 minutes on through James Rodrigues, who found the back of the net with a curled shot from outside the 18-yard box after his initial cross was deflected into his path.

Youri Tielemens beat Jordan Pickford in the 65th minute to draw the visitors level, netting with a low shot.

Pickford, however, was able to deny Maddison from stealing all 3 points for the visitors before Dominic Calvert-Lewinā€™s header went over.

Everton dropped 7th after the draw while Leicester City stay 3rd.

Manchester United 1-2 Sheffield United

The Red Devils suffered a shocking defeat by the Blades who secured their first victory at Old Trafford since their return to the top flight.

Manchester United started brightly but found it hard to break down a well organized Sheffield United block.

Bryan headed in his first Premier League goal from John Fleckā€™s corner. Anthony Martialā€™s leveller didnā€™t stand as there was a foul on Aaron Ramsdale in the build-up to the goal.

Captain Harry Maguire finally levelled the hosts in the second half, heading in Alex Tellesā€™ corner but Sheffield United restored their lead 10 minutes later when Oliver Burkeā€™s effort found the back of the net after a deflection.

The defeat leaves Man United 2nd place with 40 points, 1 behind city rivals Manchester City while Sheffield United remain bottom.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Liverpool

Liverpool got back to winning ways with victory over Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Spurs thought they made the breakthrough 4 minutes on when Son Heung Min netted after being set up by Harry Kaneā€™s brilliant pass but the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.

Mane squared the ball to set up Roberto Firmino just before the break for the opener after he had been denied twice by Hugo Lloris.

Trent Alexandre Arnold doubled the lead just after the break beating Hugo Lloris with a shot into the far corner. Spurs responded immediately through Prierre-Emille Hojbjerg who netted with a thunderous strike.

Liverpool restored their 2 goal lead through Sadio Mane who fired a shot into the roof of the net.

Liverpool moved to 4th place after the victory, 4 points behind the top of the table.

Premier League GameWeek 20 recorded 32 goals despite the fact that two matches ended in goalless draws.
