Review of Premier League GameWeek 21


Premier League GameWeek 21 was another exciting round of fixtures with lots of drama and action.

The weekend action wasnā€™t short of expectations and was as unpredictable as the season has been so far.

Everton 0-2 Newcastle United

Premier League GameWeek 21 started of with a twist when The Magpies claimed victory at Goodison Park.

Callum Wilson scored both goals as Newcastle ended their nine game goal drought.

Everton threatened on the onset with Richarlison forcing a save from Karl Darlow in the 23rd minute. The visitors however, grew into the game and came close through Callum Wilsonā€™s header denied by Jordan Pickford.

Richarlison and James Rodriguez attempted to break the deadlock before half time but were unsuccessful in doing so.

Instead, Callum Wilson scored the opener 73 minutes on with a header before doubling the lead at stoppage time, finishing a brilliant counter attack.

Newcastleā€™s victory takes them to 22 points but they remain 16th while Everton sit 8th with 33 points.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Eberechi Ezeā€™s goal proved decisive as Palace secured a home victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Palace had the better first half with better chances too, as Nathaniel Clyne and Michy Batshuayi both tried to put the hosts forward but fired over.

The Eagles finally got their goal 60 minutes on, when Eze controlled Jordan Ayewā€™s pass on the edge of the box before firing into the net.

Palaceā€™s victory see them sit 3 points above their opponents Wolves, who are 14th on the league standings.

West Bromwich Albion 2-2 Fulham

Fulham gets another draw in the bag after Ivan Cavaleiroā€™s equalizer in the 77th minute.

Fulham went ahead 10 minutes on when Bobby De Cordova-Reid fired in after being found by Mitrovic. They went on to dominate the half and almost doubled their lead when the goalscorer struck the post 8 minutes after his goal.

The Baggies were level just 2 minutes after the break when Kyle Bartley volleyed in Matheus Pereiraā€™s cross. The provider turned goalscorer to put West Brom ahead after a cross from substitute Mbaye Diagne in the 66th minute.

Ivan Cavaleiro then rescued a point for the visitors when he turned in a cross from Harrison Reed.

The result keeps Fulham 18th on 14 points, 3 above their hosts.

Manchester City 1-0 Sheffield United

Gabriel Jesus’s early strike proved decisive as Sheffield United went away with nothing at the Etihad.

Jesus ended a 9 game goalless run to put the hosts ahead as early as the 9th minute. The league leaders controlled majority of possession but hardly threatened throughout the first half.

They created more chances in the second half but were unable to double their lead with Ruben Dias heading wide from a corner and Oleksandr Zichenkoā€™s shot from distance saved well by Ramsdale.

John Fleck almost equalised for the visitors but his shot went wide.
Cityā€™s 8th victory in a row keeps them top of the league with 3 points above derby rivals Manchester Utd while Sheffield United remain bottom.

Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United

Both Manchester United and Arsenal settled for a point after a goalless draw at full time. The game saw Arsenal extend their Premier League unbeaten run to 7 matches, and United’s away unbeaten run extends to 18 league games.

The final score hardly tells the story as it was quite an open contest at the Emirates, and could have gone either way.

Fred saw his 19th minute shot denied by Bernd Leno at full stretch before Bruno Fernadesā€™ curled shot went wide as the visitors had the better chances in the first half.

The hosts were much improved after the break and dominated from then on.

Half time substitute Willian saw his shot denied by Aaron Wan Bissaka who produced a brilliant block to deny the Brazillian.

Alexandre Lacazette saw his free kick hit the cross bar and Emile Smith Rowe forced David De Gea into a fine save.

Edison Cavani had good chances to put United ahead but was unable to hit the target in tight areas.

After their Premier League GameWeek 21 clash, United remain 2nd on 41 points while Arsenal sit 10th place on 31 points.

Southampton 0 – 1 Aston Villa

Ross Barkelyā€™s goal was enough to earn the Villains victory at the Saint Marysā€™ on Saturday.

The Englishman broke the deadlock 41 minutes on, stretching to head in Jack Grealishā€™s cross for his 3rd league goal of the season.

Aston Villaā€™s goalkeeper had a man of the match performance as he was key in keeping the visitorā€™s lead till the end.

The Argentine goalkeeper denied Che Adams with a 1v1 save before keeping out Bednarekā€™s header later on. He also denied Ryan Bertrand at stoppage time whose follow up goal was ruled out after a VAR review.

Dean Smithā€™s men are now on 32 points with 19 games played while the Saints sit 11th with 29 points.

Chelsea 2-0 Burnley

Thomas Tuchel earned his first victory in charge as Chelsea defenders stole the.

Chelsea dominated most of the game and were rewarded as they broke the deadlock 5 minutes before half time through captain Cesar Azpilicueta who was set up by Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Hudson-Odoi almost doubled the lead but his effort struck the post and then he teed up Christian Pulisic whose effort went wide.

Marcos Alonso scored a beautiful goal to double the lead 6 minutes before normal time.

Chelsea climbs to 7th after a first win in 4 home games while Burnley stay 16th on 22 points.

Leicester City 1-3 Leeds United

Patrick Bamford was spectacular as he helped his side secure a 3-1 victory over Leicester City.

Leicester City took the lead 13 minutes on when James Maddison set up Harvey Barnes for the opener. The goalscorer had a one-two with Maddison before firing a shot past Ilan Meslier into the bottom corner.

Leeds leveled up just 2 minutes later through Stuart Dallas who finished smartly after a fine pass from Patrick Bamford.

Leeds went ahead in the second half when Bamford was set up by Raphinha and struck into the top corner. The goalscorer turned provider once again when he fed Jack Harrison to tap into an empty net with 6 minutes left to play.

Leeds remain 11th with 29 points while Leicester drops 4th place on 39 points.

West Ham United 1-3 Liverpool

Mohammed Salah ended his goal drought in the league as he helped his side secure victory over the Hammers.

Both keepers had key roles in an open first half with Alisson denying Michail Antonioā€™s header and Lukasz Fabianski saving Salahā€™s shot.

Liverpool broke the deadlock as the Egyptian curled the ball in from an angle after creating space for himself. He scored 8 minutes later with a sensational goal to finish off a counter-attack.

Georginio Wijnaldrum confirmed the victory with his right-footed shot going past Fabianski in the 84th minute.

Craig Dawson scored a consolation goal for the hosts later on as their winning run comes to a halt.

Liverpool are now 4 points behind leaders Manchester City who still have a game in hand, while West Ham sit 5th place with 35 points.

Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

The hosts secured their first home victory of the season in the Premier League GameWeek 21 through a lone goal from Leandro Trossard.

Brighton started the game on the front foot and almost went ahead as early as the 3rd minute through Pascal Gross. They broke the deadlock 17 minutes on through Trossard who beat Lloris with a composed finish after a pass from Gross.

Ben White almost doubled the lead in the second half but was denied by a fine save from Hugo Lloris.

Robert Sanchez also produced a superb save as Carlos Vinicius tried to draw the visitors level. Aaron Connoly looked set to add a second goal but was denied by superb defending from Toby Alderweireld.

A second win in 3 games puts Brighton on 21 points. Spurs remain 6th with 33 points.

There was a total of 19 goals in Premier League GameWeek 21, which goes to show just how keenly contested the matches were.
