Review of Premier League MatchDay 28

Manchester City remain on the road to victory, even after their recent defeat by Manchester United. Here is a recap of all the action from Premier League MatchDay 28.

READ: Preview of Premier League Gameweek 28

Wolverhampton wanderers 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool rounded up Premier League MatchDay 28 with a solitary strike from Diogo Jota. The Portuguese hurt his former club with the only goal of the encounter and rekindled Liverpool’s Premier League top-four hopes.

The former Wolves striker, who left for Liverpool in September, drilled a low first-time shot under Patricio to settle a tight contest.

The match also ended with a worrying head injury to Wolves’ goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Southampton 1-2 Brighton & Hove Albion

Leandro Trossard’s emphatic finish was able to secure maximum points for the Seagulls in an entertaining south-coast contest at St Mary’s.

Danny Welbeck’s deft touch freed the Belgium winger to stride into the box and lash home the winner, which ended their three-game losing streak.

The victory took the visitors to 16th above Newcastle, who they are hosting in their next game. They are also three points clear of 18th-placed Fulham and with a game in hand.

Che Adams had canceled out an early strike from Brighton’s skipper Lewis Dunk, who scored with a powerful header from a corner.

Leicester City 5-0 Sheffield United

Kelechi Iheanacho was the hero of the night as he bagged a superb hat-trick for Leicester City to steamroll suffering Sheffield United.

After the resignation of Chris Wilder, it seems the Blades have started planning for life at the Championship.

The victory also helped Leicester’s push for the top four. Iheanacho scored for a third successive Premier League game for the first time, meeting Jamie Vardy’s cut-back to break the deadlock shortly before the interval.

Ayoze Perez doubled their lead with a deserved fine finish into the bottom corner after 64 minutes.

Nigerian striker, Kelechi then got a brace through another assist from Vardy five minutes later. He subsequently got a hattrick through a powerful strike.

Vardy has failed to score in the last six games and was unlucky again. His shot was deflected into the net by Blades defender Ethan Ampadu.

Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Arsenal deservedly won the North London derby when they came from behind to win 2-1 which inflicted damage on Tottenham’s hopes of a place in the Premier League’s top four.

The Gunners maintained most of the possession but went behind to a piece of genius from Erik Lamela.

The Argentine who came in for the injured Son Heung-Min curved a magnificent ‘rabona’ finish beyond Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno in the 33rd minute.

After seeing efforts from Emile Smith Rowe and Cedric Soares hit the post, Arsenal restored parity on the stroke of half-time. Martin Odegaard’s effort was deflected out of the reach of Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris.

They continued from where they left off, and took the lead from the penalty spot after 64 minutes, when Alexandre Lacazette missed his kick but was fouled by Davinson Sanchez.

Spurs finished a man down after Lamela received a red card for shoving Kieran Tierney in the face with 14 minutes left.

Manchester United 1-0 West Ham

Manchester United was lucky to get a win against in-form West Ham through a Craig Dawson own goal at Old Trafford. The win strengthened their grip on a Champions League place.

West Ham failed to threaten until Said Benrahma’s introduction after an hour. United went close to scoring through efforts from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in a one-sided contest.

Leeds United 0-0 Chelsea

The goalless draw at Elland Road has extended the Blues’ unbeaten run under their German manager, Tuchel to 12 games.

They will however blame themselves for missing chances that could have got them maximum points in their bid to maintain their Champions League push.

Leeds United that have failed to win in six games were also unlucky not to score as both teams hit the woodwork and tested their opposition keepers.

The hosts almost conceded an own goal when Luke Ayling’s clearance hit team-mate Diego Llorente and looped over keeper Illan Meslier to hit the bar.

Edouard Mendy also stopped Tyler Roberts’ chip from going in after tipping the ball.

Crystal Palace 1-0 West Bromwich Albion

Palace added to West Brom’s headache with a lone goal win at home. And with the defeat, the Baggies have a massive mountain to climb.

Captain Luka Milivojevic converted the spot-kick after Darnell Furlong was adjudged to have handled Wilfried Zaha’s cross.

Everton 1-2 Burnley

Sean Dyche’s Burnley stunned Everton at Goodison Park to move further away from the relegation battle.

The visitors opened the goals account through Chris Wood’s fine finish in the 13th minute.

Dwight McNeil stunned the hosts with a stunning strike and a second goal when he sharply beat Allan to curl expertly into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

They could have made it three before half-time but Johann Gudmundsson’s low effort hit the post.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin managed to reduce the deficit for the hosts when he headed in Tom Davies’ cross.

There were no goals in the second half.

Fulham 0-3 Manchester City

Manchester City continued their winning run in the Premier League as they aim to wrestle the title back from Liverpool. Pep Guardiola’s men comfortably dispatched three past Fulham at Craven Cottage.

After initially threatening City’s defense, Fulham caved in as they could not stop John Stones from tapping in Joao Cancelo’s free-kick two minutes after the break.

Brazilian striker, Gabriel Jesus then doubled their lead after benefitting from some shoddy defending to round home goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Tosin Adarabioyo fouled Ferran Torres in the box. The goals were rounded up by Sergio Aguero’s penalty. The Argentine striker eventually scored his first Premier League goal since January 2020.

This was however a dent in Fulham’s survival. It was not helped by Brighton’s 2-1 win at St Mary’s and Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw at Villa Park. With a win here, they would have moved out of the drop zone.

Aston Villa 1-1 Newcastle United

Newcastle United was able to rescue a point against Aston Villa courtesy of Jamaal Lascelles’ goal in stoppage time.

The Tyneside club is in a relegation battle but a point against Villa is a good result for Steve Bruce’s injury-plagued squad.

The dull encounter came to life after Ollie Watkins’ header was deflected off Ciaran Clark and went in.

With just minutes remaining, Newcastle snatched a point when Lascelles headed in Jacob Murphy’s cross in the last action of the game.
