Rivers govt affirms commitment to expanding prosthetic, orthotic services

The Rivers State Government has announced a firm commitment to partnering with the Nigerian Prosthetic, Orthotic and Orthopaedic Technology Society (NPOOTS) to enhance the quality of life for residents with limb deficiencies and mobility impairments.

The Commissioner for Health, Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, assured the public of this partnership, emphasising the government’s dedication to improving accessibility and service delivery across the state.

The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Medical Services, Vincent Nwachukwu, highlighted a critical need to bridge the existing gap in public awareness and accessibility to these vital services, especially within rural communities.

Oreh challenged NPOOTS to leverage its professional expertise in promoting the life-saving importance of prosthetics and orthotics.

She affirmed that the administration, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS, is prepared to domesticate these services.

“The state government is poised to domesticate prosthetics and orthotic services at the primary and secondary health facilities, with plans to institutionalise the service at all levels of the healthcare system,” Nwachukwu stated on her behalf.

The event, which featured the Commissioner’s pledge, also saw a tangible expression of support for the community: 10 beneficiaries in the state received free artificial limbs.

In recognition of her sustained contributions to the growth of the health sector both in the state and globally, Oreh was presented with an award by NPOOTS.

The commitment underscores the state government’s strategic focus on integrating specialised rehabilitative care into its core healthcare infrastructure to ensure comprehensive support for all citizens.
