Rivers United and reigning champions Remo Stars played out a 1-1 draw in the opening fixture of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The highly anticipated clash in Abeokuta did not disappoint, as both sides showed attacking intent from the very first whistle.
The visitors stunned the champions early when Aniekeme Okon slotted home in the third minute. However, Remo Stars responded swiftly, with new signing Victor Mbaoma equalising just six minutes later to send the home fans into raptures.

Intensity and drama define the season opener
As the game progressed, both teams searched for a decisive goal, but solid defending and wasteful finishing meant chances were squandered.
The encounter grew more intense in stoppage time when Rivers United defender Temple Emekayi was shown a red card. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the visitors held firm until the final whistle.
The result means both sides avoided defeat, although they will feel opportunities were missed to claim maximum points. For Remo Stars, the draw showed their resilience, while Rivers United displayed grit in hostile territory.
Attention now turns to Sunday, when the rest of the NPFL matchday one fixtures take centre stage across the country.
Meanwhile, for their next fixtures, Rivers United will travel to Ilorin to take on Kwara United and Remo Stars will be eager to secure their first win of the season when they host league newcomers Kun Khalifa.
