As Muslims across Lagos and Nigeria marked Eid-el-Adha, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu joined in the celebration while using the occasion to renew calls for improved security and national unity.

Speaking through his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, at a special event held at The Pavilion, Lagos House, Marina, Sanwo-Olu emphasised the need for collective responsibility in building a safer and more cohesive Nigeria.

The 2025 celebration carried the theme “My Lord, Make This Land Secure” (Qur’an 14:35), reflecting on the intersection between faith and national stability.“Security remains one of the most critical issues confronting us as a nation,” the governor said.

“We must continue to support the efforts of our security agencies while also working together to build safer communities.”

He encouraged Muslims to reflect on the core values of Eid, obedience, sacrifice, and compassion, exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim (SAW), urging Nigerians to embody these principles in daily life.

Sanwo-Olu also commended the resilience and contributions of Lagos residents, assuring them of his administration’s continued commitment to inclusive governance, religious tolerance, and the overall well-being of the state’s diverse population.

The governor praised security operatives for their dedication to maintaining peace during the festive period, urging them to remain vigilant and professional in the discharge of their duties.

He called on citizens to remain hopeful and united, expressing confidence that with consistent effort and shared resolve, Nigeria could overcome its security and socio-economic challenges.

Speaking earlier at the event, Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the Deputy Governor, encouraged Nigerians to recommit to the values of sacrifice, unity, and spiritual devotion.

She described Eid-el-Adha as a period of deep reflection and renewed obedience to Allah, citing the unwavering submission of Prophet Ibrahim (SAW) and his son, Ismail (SAW), as timeless lessons in faith and trust.

Mrs Hamzat also acknowledged the leadership of Sanwo-Olu and her husband, Hamzat, for their efforts in promoting unity and good governance in Lagos.

She praised the administration’s inclusive approach, which, she noted, continues to foster peaceful coexistence and sustainable development across the state.

Delivering a keynote lecture, renowned Islamic scholar Saheed Ahmad drew parallels between the historical significance of Prophet Ibrahim’s (SAW) prayer for Makkah and the modern-day quest for a secure Nigeria.

He stressed that true national security extends beyond legislation, requiring moral discipline, justice, and spiritual integrity from both leaders and citizens.

Ahmad warned against the culture of entitlement and institutional amnesia, urging leaders to honour past sacrifices and prioritise legacy over vanity.

“This land is a pot that feeds all,” he said, “and we must not drain it while we eat.”

He challenged public officeholders to embrace accountability, reject sycophancy, and listen to constructive criticism, calling on citizens to contribute actively to preserving the nation’s moral and developmental foundation.

The celebration featured special prayers for national peace, successful leadership, and continued prosperity in Lagos State.

It was attended by top government officials, Islamic clerics, community leaders, and members of the public. Highlights included Qur’anic recitations, musical renditions, and expressions of gratitude.

Eid-el-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice”, is one of the holiest days in Islam.

It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (SAW) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, serving as a powerful reminder of faith, charity, and communal harmony.
