Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has presented a Certificate of Approval to First Bank Group for the construction of its 43-storey eco-friendly headquarters in Eko Atlantic City.
The governor, accompanied by his Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, and the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA), Gbolahan Oki, handed over the certificate to FirstHoldCo Chairman, Femi Otedola, and First Bank Group CEO, Olusegun Alebiosu, at the project’s groundbreaking ceremony.
In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu praised First Bank for its bold vision in developing what is set to become Nigeria’s tallest building.
He highlighted the significance of the investment, emphasising that it will shape the future of Eko Atlantic City and strengthen Lagos’ status as Africa’s financial hub.
“Just yesterday, we laid the foundation for the Lagos Financial International Centre, setting Lagos on a trajectory to be the envy of Africa and the world,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“Now, Mr. Femi Otedola has brought us here to begin the realization of a Lagos International Financial Centre.”
The governor also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in the transformation of Bar Beach into Eko Atlantic City, describing it as a visionary move that has attracted significant investments.

He urged other financial institutions to follow FirstBank’s lead in establishing a presence in the emerging financial district.
“This is a clarion call to other big financial institutions,” he said. “FirstBank, as usual, is leading the way, and we are ready to provide an enabling environment for more investments in Eko Atlantic City.”
The groundbreaking event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Lagos Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, business moguls Gilbert and Roland Chagoury, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Dr. Deji Adeleke, Alhaji Mohammed Indimi, and Senator Daisy Danjuma, among others.
The 43-storey FirstBank headquarters is expected to be a landmark project, reinforcing Lagos’ reputation as Africa’s leading financial and commercial hub.
