The Nigerian Senate is set to convene a special session on Wednesday to honour the memory and legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, following his recent death.

The session will be dedicated to reflecting on Buhari’s leadership and his impact on national development throughout his time in office.

This follows a similar tribute by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) last Thursday, where President Bola Tinubu praised Buhari’s style of leadership, describing him as a dignified statesman who exercised restraint and carried the weight of national leadership with composure.

Buhari passed away in London on 13 July after battling an undisclosed illness.

He was laid to rest in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, in a ceremony attended by prominent figures from across Nigeria and beyond.

Buhari remains one of the country’s longest-serving leaders.

Born in Katsina, he ruled as military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and returned as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.

In a separate development, the Senate has dismissed widespread reports on social media claiming that new states have been recommended for creation by its Constitution Review Committee.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio addressed the issue following a motion by Senator Abdul Ningi, who raised concerns about the rumours circulating online.

Akpabio clarified that although various proposals—over 40 in total—have been submitted for state creation, none has completed the rigorous constitutional process required.

He further explained that while some communities may have started convening meetings in anticipation, the National Assembly has not approved the creation of any new state.

The Senate urged the public to rely on official updates from the National Assembly and disregard unofficial claims on constitutional matters.
