Senegal defy sanctions, parade AFCON trophy in bold show of protest

Senegal national football team made a bold statement in Paris. Despite losing their title, they paraded the AFCON trophy before facing Peru.

The match took place at Stade de France, and it marked their first appearance since the controversial final.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) had earlier overturned Senegal’s victory and the title was awarded to the Morocco national football team.

The controversy began with a late penalty decision which caused the Senegalese players to walk off in protest before returning to complete the game.

Senegal also wore jerseys with two stars. This signified both their 2021 triumph and the disputed 2025 title.

On the pitch, they defeated Peru 2-0, as goals from Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr sealed the win.

The protest was symbolic, yet powerful. Senegal made it clear they still believe they are champions.
