International Day of the Preservation of the Ozone Layer or World Ozone Day

The ozone layer is like a canopy that shields the Earth from the dangerous rays of the sun. But it happens that through our actions, we have to started to deplete the layer that protects us from the sun.

Today is dedicated to raising awarenesses about the preservation of ozone layer. There are various actions we have to stop because it depletes the ozone layer. The ozone layer is one of the feature that makes the Earth habitable.

The commemoration was recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in December 16, 2000.The theme for World Ozone Day 2024 is ā€œMontreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Actionsā€ reflecting the Montreal Protocol’s crucial role in both protecting the ozone layer and driving broader climate action initiatives globally.

Mexican Independence Day

The Mexican Independence Day is popularly known as El Grito or El Grito de Independencia which marks the beginning of the strife for independence of Mexico from Spanish rule.

It all started in 1810 when Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla summoned the largely Indian and mestizo congregation of his small Dolores parish church and urged them to take up arms and fight for Mexico’s independence from Spain. This war lasted until September 27, 1821.

Martyrsā€™ Day

This is a cultural holiday in Libya that is celebrated on September 16th each year. The day commemorates the memory of Libyans who were killed or exiled under Italian rule and those who were killed in the 17th of February revolution.

The holiday marks the anniversary of the execution of a notable resistance leader on this day in 1931. On this day, Libyans pay tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence of their country.

The day is observed as a public holiday, and people visit cemeteries and monuments to pay their respects to the martyrs.

Malaysia Day

Today is Malaysia is a special day as they celebrate the establishment of the Malaysian federation. In 1963, Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore was merged to form Malaysia- a new federation.

The commemoration was made official in 2010 and since then Malaysians home and abroad observe this holiday. This event is different from the country’s Independence Day which is observed every year on August 31

1920- Wall Street bombing

This bombing that struck Wall Street in New York City on September 16, 1920, killing 38 people and injuring hundreds more. No group claimed responsibility for the crime, which remains unsolved.

About noon on September 16, as Wall Street clerks, receptionists, and brokers were heading for lunch, a horse-drawn cart exploded in front of the offices of J.P. Morgan & Co. at the corner of Wall and Broad streets in downtown New York City. Thirty people were killed instantly, more than 300 were injured, and eight later died from their injuries.

1985, 1997- Steve Jobs quits and returns to Apple

Today in Steve Jobs’ life in different years was significant day. Today, he quit Apple in 1985 and he returned today in 1997. Jobs resigned as chairman of Apple Computer on Sept. 16, 1985, after losing a boardroom battle for control of the company with then-CEO John Sculley. Jobs had co-founded Apple seven years earlier.

But in Sept. 16, 1997, Apple announced that Jobs had officially been named interim CEO after the former CEO, Gil Amelio was fired.

2011- Danes Elects First Female Prime Minister

There was a turn in the history of Denmark in 2011 as the elect their first female Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt of Danish Social Democrats. Helle was 44- years when she was elected into power and she served in her position for 4 years.

Nick Jonas’ birthday

The American singer, songwriter and actor was born today in the year 1992 in Dallas, Texas, United States. He is the youngest of the Jonas Brothers and is currently married to Priyanka Chopra. The union is blessed with a daughter. We celebrate Nick Jonas as he turns 32 today!
