Serie A matches scheduled for Easter Monday have been postponed after the confirmed death of Pope Francis at age 88.
The Vatican made the announcement early Monday after the Pope succumbed to illness, just days after being discharged from hospital treatment. His passing halted both religious and sporting calendars across Italy.
Four matches — Torino vs. Udinese, Cagliari vs. Fiorentina, Genoa vs. Lazio, and Parma vs. Juventus — were affected. These games will now be played on Wednesday, April 23 at 17:30 GMT+1.
Given that Easter Monday is a national holiday in Italy, the original fixtures were set to attract large, passionate crowds. However, mourning the Pope took precedence.

Known globally as a devout Catholic leader, Pope Francis was also a proud football lover. Since childhood, he supported Argentina’s San Lorenzo with devotion.

San Lorenzo expressed their sorrow in a powerful tribute: “Our hearts ache. Pope Francis has left this world, but he will never leave our hearts.”
They added, “His passion for San Lorenzo always moved us… and unites us in a constant prayer for his soul.”
Serie A clubs across the board also offered heartfelt messages. Among them, Roma’s tribute stood out for its emotional depth.
“A loss that deeply saddens our city and the entire world,” read Roma’s statement. “His humility and courage have touched millions.”
