Sevilla sack head coach Mendilibar seven months after appointment

Sevilla have sacked head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar after just two wins this La Liga season.

Mendilibar managed Sevilla’s relegation threats properly, avoiding the drop after his appointment seven months ago.

“Sevilla have decided to relieve Jose Luis Mendilibar of his duties as the club’s head coach following the results at the start of the season,” said the club in a statement.

“The club would like to thank the Basque coach for his services, whose role will go down in the club’s history after winning the Europa League in Budapest.”

The club sit 14th in La Liga following Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Mendilibar was in charge when Sevilla beat both Manchester United and Juventus en route to last season’s Europa League final.

The Andalusian club eventually won on penalties against Italian side AS Roma to extend their own record number of titles.
