Vice President Kashim Shettima has commended the MacArthur Foundation for its substantial contributions to Nigeria’s development and democratic growth over the past 30 years.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima urged the Foundation to deepen its collaboration with the federal government to accelerate the implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s programs and policies.

Speaking at the event marking the 30th anniversary of the MacArthur Foundation in Abuja on Wednesday, the Vice President stressed the critical role of partnerships in governance.

He emphasised that no government can or should operate in isolation and that the success of any democracy hinges on fostering strong collaborations.

Reflecting on the Foundation’s work, Shettima noted that its interventions over the past three decades have highlighted the significance of cooperation, the value of strategic alliances, and the cost of conflict in delivering public services effectively.

“The successes we have recorded across various sectors of our nation—especially in promoting accountability in governance—are owed to our shared resolve to work together,” he added.

In a gesture of partnership, Vice President Shettima, represented by Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, extended an invitation to the MacArthur Foundation and its beneficiaries to collaborate closely with the government.

He stated, “We invite the MacArthur Foundation and its beneficiaries to work together with us as we endeavour to fulfil our commitments to the nation. In areas where our interests converge, let us showcase our unity in purpose—serving the people of Nigeria.”

Dr Baba-Ahmed emphasised the significant impact of the foundation’s initiatives in the country over the years, highlighting that ‘the scope and frequency of your support have far-reaching effects.’

“The beneficiaries of your grants are not distant or abstract figures—they are everyday people. They are organisations and individuals who, without your timely interventions, might have faltered in their civil pursuits. They are the promoters of democratic values, the visionaries advocating for a society where fairness and justice are not mere ideals but lived realities,” the VP further pointed out.

Regarding the Foundation’s contributions to advancing democracy in Nigeria, the Vice President conveyed his firm belief that the Foundation has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of democracy in the country.

He stated, “Your presence has served as a vital anchor for promoting interventions that not only foster good governance but also make significant contributions to our nation’s human capital.

“The voices you have empowered and the platforms you have elevated have become catalysts for creating a Nigeria that functions effectively—a nation where governance is persistently scrutinized, not out of malice or partisanship, but through the genuine efforts of individuals driven by integrity rather than electoral ambitions.”

Shettima praised the MacArthur Foundation for its 30 years of unwavering commitment to serving humanity, highlighting that its contributions ‘represent a journey characterised by dedication, courage, and a steadfast vision to uplift the most vulnerable members of society.’

“The experiences of this esteemed foundation exemplify determination, an unrelenting quest for a better society, and a conscious choice of the path less travelled—one guided by compassion, hope, and the promise of lasting impact,” he added.
