Shettima pays tribute to Ifeanyi Ubah

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday joined his former colleagues at the Senate in a moving tribute to the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Speaking during a valedictory session held at the Senate Chambers, Shettima described the late lawmaker as a “free spirit” who broke down political and ethnic barriers, and whose political dexterity defied his youth.

The ceremony, which took place with Ubah’s remains laid at the foyer of the Senate’s White House Wing, marked a somber moment for senators to reflect on the life and contributions of the youngest member of the 9th Senate.

In his tribute, Shettima recalled Ubah’s exceptional qualities, describing him as “one of the brightest stars” in the Senate, whose age belied his remarkable political acumen and grassroots support.“

His bridge-building capacity elevated his political journey beyond older and more established giants in the arena,” Shettima noted, emphasising that Ubah was on a path to even greater achievements when he passed away.

Shettima, who had worked closely with Ubah during his tenure as Governor of Borno State, spoke of the late senator’s generosity, noting that his “free spirit” transcended political and ethnic lines, uniting people from all walks of life.

While offering condolences to Ubah’s family, friends, and associates, Shettima reminded those present that “death is an inevitable destiny,” adding that “we are travelers on our journeys home, from God to God.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also paid tribute to the late senator, announcing that the day had been designated to honour Ubah’s life and legacy.

The seat of the departed lawmaker was adorned with the Nigerian flag and four symbolic candles, a gesture of respect from the Senate.

Describing Ubah as a “visionary leader with extraordinary empathy,” Akpabio highlighted his commitment to economic empowerment and community development.

The Senate President also expressed regret over the “huge deficit” left by Ubah’s passing, acknowledging the difficult-to-fill vacuum in the country’s political terrain.

Senators, in turn, took to the floor to pay their respects, offering prayers for Ubah’s family, and commending his lasting impact on Nigerian politics.

The ceremony ended with a collective prayer for the late Senator’s soul and for strength for his loved ones during this difficult time.
