World number one Aryna Sabalenka watched her French Open ambitions crumble after a stunning quarter-final defeat to Diana Shnaider. The Belarusian looked firmly in control early on, but everything soon spiralled dramatically.
Sabalenka, last year’s Roland Garros finalist, surged ahead 6-3, 4-1 with authority. However, the match flipped unexpectedly as Shnaider mounted a fearless and relentless comeback.
The Russian 25th seed, competing in her maiden Grand Slam quarter-final, produced a breathtaking turnaround. She stormed through 12 of the last 13 games to seal a remarkable 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Sabalenka entered the clash as the overwhelming favourite and the only remaining Grand Slam champion. Yet, her composure deserted her under pressure as errors piled up rapidly.
Windy conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier disrupted her rhythm and amplified her struggles. As a result, she racked up an alarming 57 unforced errors during the contest.
Shnaider’s comeback stuns French Open as Sabalenka’s errors and emotions derail title bid
Frustration soon became visible as Sabalenka’s level dipped significantly throughout the match. She gestured wildly, roared in anger, and repeatedly vented towards her team.

The collapse echoed her painful loss in last year’s final against Coco Gauff. On that occasion, she also surrendered a lead after committing 70 unforced errors.

“Honestly I am speechless,” Shnaider said in her post-match interview.
“She is the world number one, so I was just trying to do my best. I had to fight for every point,” Shnaider stated.
Meanwhile, the result reshapes the tournament landscape in dramatic fashion. With Sabalenka gone, the draw now appears wide open for emerging contenders.
Shnaider now advances to face qualifier Maja Chwalinska in an unlikely semi-final clash. Few would have predicted this matchup at the start of the competition.
Chwalinska earned her place after overcoming Anna Kalinskaya earlier on Wednesday. As a result, the French Open continues to deliver shocks at every turn.
