Sony may hike PS5 prices over tariffs, costs

Sony might raise PlayStation 5 prices globally, excluding the United States, in response to growing tariff-related manufacturing costs.

A projected $680 million in additional expenses has forced Sony to explore higher pricing and shifting production locations.

Previously, Sony raised PS5 prices across Europe, Canada, and Japan due to inflation and unfavorable exchange rates.

Europe saw the disc model rise to €549.99 and the digital version increase to €449.99 across major retail outlets.

In Japan, prices jumped 21%, reaching ¥60,478 for disc and ¥49,478 for the digital edition, sparking consumer backlash online.

Tariff Impact and Supply Chain Adjustments

Sony’s CFO Lin Tao stated tariffs could force production relocation or further pricing changes depending on future policy developments.

Most PS5 consoles are currently manufactured in China, placing them directly in the path of any new U.S. import tariffs.

CEO Hiroki Totoki confirmed Sony is considering moving manufacturing to the U.S., though that shift involves significant logistical effort.

Domestic production would reduce tariff exposure but increase labor and infrastructure costs, complicating Sony’s long-term financial strategy.

To prepare, Sony stockpiled three months’ worth of PS5 units in U.S. warehouses ahead of potential tariff enforcement.

The company also revised shipping strategies, focusing on optimized allocation and regional fulfillment to offset distribution risks.

Despite these pressures, Sony’s gaming division expects a 16% profit rise this year, led by strong software and accessory sales.

The upcoming release of “Ghost of Yotei” is projected to support PlayStation’s revenue momentum during the next fiscal quarter.

Sony is maintaining flexibility across operations, monitoring geopolitical developments and currency fluctuations closely in all affected regions.

Further decisions on pricing and production will depend on market responses and the duration of imposed tariff conditions globally.
