Sporting Lisbon produced a shock 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League, sending the English champions to their third straight loss across all competitions.

At the Jose Alvalade Stadium, Phil Foden’s fourth-minute goal gave City an early lead, but the Portuguese side responded in style. Viktor Gyökeres equalised right before halftime and completed a hat-trick in the second half, including two penalties. Meanwhile, Norwegian striker Erling Haaland missed a penalty for City after hitting the crossbar when they trailed 3-1.

City’s loss in Lisbon also ended two historic streaks for the club. Sporting’s win ended Man City’s 26-game unbeaten run in the Champions League and a 27-game streak in European competitions—both records that had surpassed previous marks by a single game. Only few days ago, Bournemouth had ended the English side’s Premier League record—a 32-game unbeaten run.

It’s been a rough week for Pep Guardiola’s team, who has lost in the Champions League for the first time since May 2022 (against Real Madrid). A week ago, they lost 2-1 to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup. This recent slump has raised questions about City’s form as they struggle to regain momentum.
