Starlink hikes prices to ₦75,000 after NCC tariff approval signal

In an email sent out on Monday, Starlink warned its clients in Nigeria that it will increase its monthly subscription rates from the current $99 to $165, an increment that will be effective after January 27, 2025. New subscription customers will be charged the adjusted prices from the time they sign up, while current customers will experience the price increase in their subsequent bills.

In an email to users, Starlink said, “To further develop the Starlink network and offer a more reliable, high-speed connection in Nigeria, we are changing our monthly subscription rates. These changes are part of our ongoing investment in the infrastructure we are making to enhance your experience of Starlink.”

The basic package will also be hiked from ₦38,000 per month to ₦75,000 under the new plan.” However, the new mobile global roaming service has been brought down to ₦717,000 on the monthly subscription fee. This is the second time the company is seeking to adjust upward the price of its services in Nigeria. NCC denied the previous increase in October due to lack of a regulatory approval by the firm.

Since the advent of the Nigerian telecom operators, they have been venting their calls on the NCC to allow them to review tariffs upwards but have met some setbacks.

However, the NCC is expected to approve a hike beginning the first quarter of 2025. Based on this email sent by Starlink to customers, it seems that the firm is expecting it to coincide with the planned upcoming changes in regulations.

This latest development may signify a general change of trend as the Nigerian internet market grows; it affects the satellite and telecom services price and the general structure of competition to consumers in the Nigerian internet market.
