“Stop raping women” – Simi demands death penalty for rapists, sparks heated debate

Afrobeats star Simisola Kosoko, widely known as Simi, has stirred intense reactions online after calling for the execution of individuals convicted of rape.

Her comments come amid growing public concern over increasing reports of sexual assault across Nigeria in recent weeks.

Taking to X on Tuesday night, the singer expressed deep frustration over the situation and urged both the public and authorities to take decisive action against perpetrators of sexual violence.

“I’m sickkk of this. Stop raping women. They need to castrate rapists and burn them,” she wrote in a fierce X post.

The statement immediately triggered widespread debate on social media. While many supporters echoed her anger and demand for justice, others argued that if such severe punishment is considered, similar consequences should apply to individuals who make false rape accusations.

In response, Simi clarified that her focus remains on standing up for victims of sexual assault, not on cases involving false allegations. Her clarification, however, further fueled online arguments.

Dismissing backlash from some male followers, the singer insisted she was speaking from lived realities shared by many women. She claimed that nearly every woman she knows has experienced some form of sexual assault at some point in their lives.

She maintained that the existence of false accusations should not silence conversations about sexual violence or discourage advocacy for victims.

“How many of your friends have actually assaulted women as vibes?? Women are terrified to go out. Women in their homes are not safe either. Ask your sisters. Ask your female friends and your girlfriends. Ask your wives. We’re not all crazy. Stop raping women,” she added.

Simi further urged men to take responsibility by calling out and correcting harmful behavior among their peers. According to her, the failure of men to hold one another accountable contributes to an environment that emboldens perpetrators.

Her remarks have since continued to generate mixed reactions, reflecting the broader national conversation about sexual violence, justice, and accountability.
