The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reassured the public that it is addressing the recent national grid disturbance, which occurred at approximately 11:29 AM on Thursday.

TCN in a statement released by its Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah on Thursday said the disruption was caused by a sudden spike in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, triggering a temporary system collapse.

TCN said it immediately initiated recovery operations and successfully restored power to the Abuja Axis within minutes.

The company said efforts to fully restore the grid are ongoing.TCN further explained that the frequency spike was due to issues at one of its substations, which was subsequently shut down to prevent further complications.

The company said is also engaged in significant repair work on several critical transmission lines and substations, including the 330kV transmission line along the Shiroro-Mando axis, major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and the restoration of the second Ugwuaji-Apir 330kV transmission line.

Furthermore, TCN highlighted that it is addressing the weaknesses identified in the transmission system, following the submission of an investigative report on previous grid collapses.

In response, the company said implementation of both technical upgrades and strategic interventions based on the report’s recommendations are ongoing.

ā€œThese efforts are aimed at enhancing the stability and resilience of the grid.ā€

However, TCN acknowledged that while the ongoing repairs and improvements are expected to significantly boost the systemā€™s performance, some level of instability may persist until all major works are completed.

The company urged the public to remain patient and understanding as these critical repairs and upgrades take place.

TCN reiterated its commitment to improving the reliability of the electricity supply, recognizing the importance of stable power in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

The company assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to enhance the long-term stability of the grid, including addressing infrastructure damage from issues like vandalism.
