Ten Hag eyes Bayer Leverkusen as Xabi Alonso prepares for Real Madrid switch

Erik ten Hag is reportedly on the verge of sealing a sensational return to management with Bayer Leverkusen, as Xabi Alonso prepares to take the reins at Real Madrid.

After months out of the spotlight, the former Manchester United boss seems set to re-enter the dugout with a Bundesliga giant that recently enjoyed its most historic season.

Ten Hag, who was dismissed by United in October 2024, has been biding his time despite several offers. Nevertheless, sources close to the Dutchman confirmed earlier this month that he planned to return to management by July.

Although the Leverkusen could not replicate last season’s extraordinary success, they still secured a Champions League place after finishing second. Importantly, Ten Hag is no stranger to German football, having managed Bayern Munich’s second team between 2013 and 2015.

Moreover, the 55-year-old arrives with silverware credentials. During his time at Old Trafford, Ten Hag guided United to an FA Cup and League Cup triumph. He also delivered a third-place league finish in the 2022–23 campaign. However, a shaky start to the following season eventually led to his dismissal after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

Meanwhile, Alonso’s Leverkusen legacy is etched in history. Under his watch, the club not only lifted its first-ever Bundesliga crown but also claimed the German Cup, achieving a stunning domestic double.

His expected move to Real Madrid opens the door for Ten Hag to step into one of Europe’s most promising managerial projects.

Should the deal go through, it would represent a fascinating career reset for Ten Hag and a fresh chapter for Leverkusen as they prepare for another season on Europe’s grandest stage.
