The Body Keeps Count (Part 4): Importance of drinking water

Our organs need water to function properly. Up to 60% of the adult body is made up of water. This is why when measuring weight, water content is separated from fat content and so on, to provide an accurate measurement.

How much water a person needs varies from person to person, depending on weight and other environmental factors. Men generally need at least 12 cups a day, while women need a minimum of 9 cups. However, this is just a general recommendation.

Benefits of drinking water

  1. Water helps kidneys remove waste from the blood in the form of urine. Water also helps keep your blood vessels open so that blood can travel freely to your kidneys, and deliver essential nutrients to them. But if you become dehydrated, then it is more difficult for this delivery system to work.
  2. Water helps us restore fluids lost through metabolism, breathing and sweating.
  3. Water helps our bodies regulate and keep a normal temperature.
