The Effect of Dodgy Online Business Practices

Scammers

In a society where success is a competition, a lot of people are determined to become rich; either genuinely or through crooked means. The quest to get-rich-quick has turned honesty into a “big deal” among some business owners. Consequently, this has led to an increase in the number of dodgy online shops.

Besides, people devise dubious means to swindle people of their hard-earned cash in a bid to meet up with their aspired lifestyles.

Online businesses take the lead

The increasing rate of dodgy practices in online businesses has necessitated people to be wary of online vendors. One of such vendors accused of false representation and shoddy business practices is the boss of Mizwanneka Hair (@mizwanneka), Mizwanneka Dorcas Nkumah. According to the Foundation of Investigative Journalism, Mizwanneka Hair has left many customers disappointed from false promo promises.

There are claims that Miss Nkumah operates promos which attract a good number of customers. However, she does not deliver on the orders after payment has been made. This consistent behaviour of swindling customers necessitated her victims to call her out.

It is pertinent to note that Mizwanneka often responds harshly to her customers when they complain about their orders. At times, she delays delivery for months. And for those lucky enough to receive their order, the products are usually substandard. Sadly, Mizwanneka is one of the many dodgy businesses who thrive through fraudulent practices.

Dodgy business enablers

The Foundation of Investigative Journalism (FIJ) also exposed Ngozi Kachi Onyeluo of Kachi Hair Beauty. Just like Mizwanneka Hair, Kachi has been tagged as one of the dodgy online hair businesses in Nigeria. Her modus operandi is similar to that of Mizwanneka.

Her victims reported that they trusted her because her mother- Nolly wood actress Ireti Doyle – promoted her daughter’s business. It turns out that she thrived as her business reached the social media pages of her mother. While some hoped that Ireti Doyle would call her daughter to order, she has kept mute.

After being called out by the Foundation of Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Kachi Beauty Products has refunded 12 million naira to 16 of her victims. Nevertheless, there are still a good number she owes.

On Sunday, Nollywood actress Nancy Isime promoted Mizwanneka Hair as she plans to extend her business to Ghana. Meaning an increase in the number of more innocent customers who are likely to fall victim to her dodgy practices. Apparently, these celebrity endorsers enable them to expand and stay in ‘’business’’.

Any end in sight?

When brave customers call out dodgy business owners, what is the place of the law in these cases? There is need for the law to take its course. The effect of bribing individuals who are supposed to uphold the law keeps the people helpless.

The law must deal with culprits whose only ladder to success is to swindle people of their money. This will not only serve as a deterrent to others, but it will encourage people to be more upright in their business dealings.
