Nigerian Footballers in Europe Weekly Performance Review


With lots of talking points, let’s take a look at how Nigerian players in Europe performed this past week.

It’s been a week of fun and excitement as we conclude another round of football. On our screens were the Italian Serie A and the German Bundesliga returned to action for the 2020/2021 season.

Nigerian Players in England

Wilfred Ndidi was again deployed as a centre half against Burnley after his stellar performance against West Bromwich last week.

His partnership with Caglar Soyuncu seems to yield dividends as The Foxes bagged their second win of the season against Burnley on Sunday evening.

His performance was once again outstanding as Leicester City claimed a 4-2 victory over Burnley. Ndidi featured for the duration of the whole game. However, his compatriot – Kelechi Iheanacho – wasn’t able to get any play time, as he was an unused substitute.

Alex Iwobi came on as a substitute in Everton’s victory over West Brom on Saturday evening after missing the season opener due to injury.

He featured against West Brom as a substitute, 15 minutes to the end of normal time. The Toffees bagged another win against West Brom in a 5-2 victory.

Dominic Calvert Lewin scored a hat trick with James Rodrigues and Michael Keane also getting on the scoresheet.

Eberechi Eze made another substitute appearance coming on for Jefferey Schlupp in Crystal Palace’s win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Just after Wilfred Zaha shot in a penalty to give Palace a 2-0 lead, Eze came on to provide fresh legs to protect his team’s goal margin.

After United pulled one back, Zaha scored a stunner to ensure the visitors went home with a win of 3 goals to 1.

Nigerian Players in Spain

Samuel Chukwueze kept his place in the starting line up in Villareal’s encounter with Eibar on Saturday.

He won the trust of Unai Emery and produced another stunning performance against Eibar. The Nigerian set up Gerard Moreno to level the score line in the 63rd minute of the game. Villareal then bagged their first win of the season, staging a 2-1 comeback over Eibar.
