‘Three for Trouble’ Review: Ben Cassie’s film blends comedy, trauma, and social commentary

Three for Trouble

Three for Trouble is a Nigerian movie directed by Ben Cassie and produced by Uche Mbunabo. The film, starring Bambam Adenibuyan, Sarian Martin, and Omeche Oko, begins as a lighthearted comedy but ends as a poignant social drama. What starts as playful satire evolves into a serious commentary on society’s struggles. The almost 3-hour-long movie is filled with giggles, yet also offers reflection and thought-provoking insights into the realities of society.

Three for Trouble centers on the lives of sisters, whose roles are played by Bambam Adenibuyan, Sarian Martin, and Omeche Oko. These siblings are not just regular ones; they are a clash and mix of personalities. The first-born is a die-hard Christian fanatic, the second a hot-headed tomboy, and the third an unserious neighborhood harlot. The film explores themes such as religious hypocrisy and moral corruption, Abuse and lasting trauma, Exploitation of women, Parental negligence and betrayal, Corruption and greed, Gender and power dynamics, Unfaithfulness and broken trust, Revenge and justice, Loss of innocence, and obstructed love and relationships.

The movie depicts the effect of abuse and the strong impact it can have on a person. The siblings ultimately developed their identity and behavior from their experience and trauma. This movie is not only an eye-opener and wake-up call for the need for a reexamination of our actions as a society, but also a glance at the effects and consequences of an abuser’s actions in a victim’s life.

The actors did a fantastic job in portraying the lives and realities of their characters. The performance was top-notch. As a viewer, I was able to feel the emotions and expressions of each character. Through its raw portrayal of trauma and redemption, the film achieved a deep sense of catharsis.

The film was almost three hours in duration, which I think was unnecessary. It wasn’t really necessary for the movie to stretch to almost three hours, and this excessive runtime became a major turn-off. Instead of building momentum, it only postponed the actual climax and dragged the audience through a repetitive, round-and-round plot cycle. For long stretches, there was simply too much nothing going on, so that the real substance of the story arrived only very close to the end, making the payoff feel delayed and less impactful than it could have been.

Overall, Three for Trouble is a good watch with a powerful message, although it may be marred by the excessively long plot. The movie is available on YouTube at @Uche MbunaboTv
