President Bola Tinubu has appointed Hafsat Bakari as the Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), pending her confirmation by the Senate.
According to Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Ms Bakari is a lawyer and financial intelligence expert with extensive experience in anti-money laundering (AML), counter-terrorism financing (CTF), and counter-proliferation financing (CPF).

Prior to her appointment as NFIU CEO, she held the position of Deputy Director at the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, and has previously served in various capacities including Head of the General Services Unit, Head of the Strategy and Reorientation Unit, and Head of the Board Secretariat at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The President expects that Ms Bakari will bring her wealth of experience and expertise to bear in this crucial role, particularly in light of his administration’s efforts to combat illicit financial flows and other malpractices prevalent in certain segments of the nation’s foreign exchange markets.
