President Bola Tinubu has approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows, a key initiative aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The announcement was made on yesterday the official launch of the programme at the State House in Abuja.

The event was attended by Nigeria’s development partners, senior government officials, and traditional leaders, including the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

The fellows, selected from each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, emerged from a pool of 360,000 applicants following a rigorous merit-based process recommended by Professor Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

Their appointment was met with resounding applause from attendees.

President Tinubu hailed the initiative as a transformative step in his administration’s commitment to empowering Nigeria’s youth and strengthening healthcare delivery.

“This programme underscores our dedication to harnessing the immense potential of our young population. With over 60% of Nigerians under 30, we have one of the most dynamic and resourceful youth populations in the world. This initiative provides a platform for them to drive innovation, economic prosperity, and social transformation”, Tinubu stated.

The President encouraged the newly employed fellows to see themselves as future leaders in Nigeria’s healthcare system and to embrace the opportunities ahead.

“Your selection is not just about recruitment; it is a testament to our commitment to providing equal opportunities for all Nigerians, regardless of social status, gender, or background.

“You are the country’s greatest asset, and we are determined to build a future where Nigeria stands tall on the global stage,” he added.

President Tinubu further emphasised that the programme is designed to cultivate a new generation of health leaders who will drive meaningful and sustained improvements in the sector.

“No nation can thrive if its people are unhealthy. A weak healthcare system threatens sustainable development, while a strong one ensures national prosperity. You are the pillars of this vision,” he said.

Professor Pate expressed optimism about the impact of the fellows on Nigeria’s health sector, stating that the initiative marks the beginning of a social movement for improved healthcare in the country.

Other dignitaries, including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and Minister of Youth, Ayodele Olawande, also delivered inspiring messages to the fellows.

The National Health Fellows initiative is part of the Tinubu administration’s broader efforts to empower Nigerian youths and strengthen key sectors for national development.
