President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorised the full disbursement of bonuses and allowances to the Super Falcons ahead of their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final against Morocco.

This financial greenlight, announced by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), represents a critical show of faith in the Nigerian women’s team as they prepare for the showdown in Rabat.

According to Dikko, all entitlements have been released and will reach players and officials without delay, a first in recent tournament preparations.

Dikko emphasised that the payment is more than a financial transaction – it reflects a renewed era of respect, dignity, and professionalism under President Tinubu’s leadership. He noted that future generations would look back at these reforms with appreciation, especially given Nigeria’s historical struggles with sports funding.

With this morale boost, the Super Falcons are now firmly focused on extending their dominance in African women’s football. A win on Saturday would secure Nigeria’s tenth WAFCON title. The final will be staged at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

Meanwhile, hosts Morocco are chasing history of their own. After a heartbreaking loss to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the 2022 final, the Atlas Lionesses are hungry to lift their maiden WAFCON trophy on home soil. However, with renewed motivation and financial backing, the Nigerian team stands as a formidable obstacle.

This latest development is also a crucial step in building trust between the government and athletes. For years, issues of unpaid bonuses and poor treatment have haunted Nigerian football.

It is left to be seen whether the Super Falcons will soar to glory again or Morocco breaks their own ceiling.
