President Bola Tinubu has called off his planned national broadcast for Nigeria’s Democracy Day and will instead speak from the National Assembly.
The change in plans was confirmed on Wednesday, ahead of the 26th anniversary of the country’s return to democratic rule.
The President will now address Nigerians during a joint session of the National Assembly scheduled for Thursday, June 12.
A statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation explained that Tinubu would attend the joint sitting at 12 noon, and this would serve as his Democracy Day speech.
It was also revealed that the usual military parade held annually to celebrate the day has been cancelled, though no reason was given for this.

Despite the cancellation of the broadcast and parade, other activities for the day will still take place.
A public lecture is set to be held at the State House Conference Centre by 4 p.m., with the theme focusing on the progress of democracy in Nigeria and the importance of reform.
Only accredited State House reporters will be allowed to cover the event.
